Hearing Aid Batteries & Accessories

All hearing aids are powered by batteries. Unless you have a rechargeable hearing aid, your device requires hearing aid batteries. Hearing aid batteries are categorized from smallest to largest using the following numbers: 10, 312, 13, and 675. They also use a standardized color-coding system which helps people easily identify the right batteries for their device:

• Yellow: Size 10
• Brown: Size 312
• Orange: 13
• Blue: 675

When you receive your hearing aids and are shown how to use them, our audiologists will tell you which size and color your device requires.

Hearing aid batteries usually last between 5 to 7 days. A few factors impact the duration of your hearing aid’s battery life: the type of hearing aid, the size of the battery, and what the environment you are in requires of your hearing aid. Additionally, similar to most electronic devices, how often and how you use your hearing aids also impacts battery life. The more active a hearing aid is - streaming audio for example - the more battery it uses.

Hearing aids require greater power to perform such a range of functions - processing and amplifying sound, adjusting sound to meet your needs, filtering background noise, etc. This is more work than a watch for example which doesn’t manage numerous operations.

There are a few signs that indicate it is time to change your batteries:

• You hear a “low battery” beep or voice which communicates that your battery level is low and needs to be changed.
• Sound becomes muffled or distorted, causing you to increase the volume more than you normally would.

You will likely develop a routine of changing your batteries once a week or every other week, depending on what your hearing aid requires.

There are a few tips you can practice to help hearing aid batteries last as long as possible. This includes:

• When not wearing your hearing aids for an extended amount of time, completely remove the battery and safely store it.
• When you are not wearing your hearing aid (when you are sleeping for example), power it off and open the battery door. This also helps dry out your hearing aid, preventing moisture from accumulating in the battery compartment.
• Do not store your hearing aid batteries in extreme temperatures (hot or cold) which can easily drain battery power.

It is important to know that hearing aid batteries should be stored in spaces that are room temperature. Storing batteries in places like the refrigerator and humid settings like the bathroom can actually cause battery corrosion and shorten battery life.

Storing hearing aid batteries next to or near where you store your device at night is likely the best place. Keeping hearing aid batteries in your bedside drawer is a great way to keep them protected as well as accessible.

In addition to not keeping your hearing aid batteries in extreme temperatures, a few useful tips include:

• Wash your hands before changing your batteries. This prevents any oils or dirt that are on your hands from getting on new batteries which can damage them.
• Always carry an extra set of batteries with you. Be sure to keep them away from metal objects like keys or coins which protects them against discharging.
• Open the battery compartment at night, and leave it open overnight to dry out your hearing aid. We recommend keeping at least a one-month’s supply of hearing aid batteries and ordering more when you are down to 4 or 5 so that you always have a consistent supply.
